Brooklyn's early goals knock Portland out of U.S. Open Cup.

PORTLAND — A historic moment played out Tuesday night as the Portland Phoenix hosted the Brooklyn Italians in an opening-round match of the U.S. Open Cup, American soccer’s national championship tournament and one of the oldest sports competitions in the country.

Too bad the Phoenix didn’t have time to enjoy it.

Brooklyn scored on three set pieces – two in the opening seven minutes – forcing Portland to play from behind in what ended as a 3-2 loss in a driving rain at Deering High’s Memorial Field.

"Mistakes were the difference. We’ve only got ourselves to blame," said Phoenix Coach Paul Baber.

"On the balance of the game we had so much possession, I wouldn’t say we had hundreds of chances, but I think if we’d have played five times we’d win 4 of 5. However we dug ourselves a hole by going down 2-0."

It was the first time a Maine club participated in the Open Cup, a 99-year-old tournament featuring 64 professional and amateur clubs from the top four tiers of American soccer.

The Phoenix qualified by winning the fourth-tier USL Premier Development League Northeast Division in 2011.

Brooklyn, playing in the fourth-tier National Premier Soccer League, advanced to a second-round match May 22 with the Rochester Rhinos of the third-tier USL Professional Division. The winner of that match will play a top-tier Major League Soccer club.

"Being the first club from Maine to be involved in the Open Cup is a tremendous achievement," Baber said. "We’re proud to be in it but very disappointed to be knocked out so early, especially when we believe we were the better team.

"All we can concentrate on now is that we have the same results in the regular season so that we put ourselves in this position next year and take it a step further at least."

Nathaniel Simons headed in Oscar Castillo’s corner kick in the fifth minute for a 1-0 lead. Two minutes later, Christian Turizo’s free kick from 20 yards got by Phoenix keeper Ciaran Nugent (four saves).

Portland settled in from there, patiently working out passing sequences of six to nine passes at a time. While they dominated in midfield, the Phoenix had trouble finding their way to the Brooklyn box. The Italians seemed content to disrupt Portland’s attack in the midfield, drive the ball deep in Portland’s end, where the Phoenix rapidly began their build-up yet again.

Jumol Harewood pushed Brooklyn’s lead to 3-0 in the 79th minute, when his free kick from 25 yards slipped inside the left post.

But a minute later, left fullback Blaike Woodruff scored the first of his two goals to cut it to 3-1. Then, in the 90th minute, Woodruff’s long volley found the top right corner to beat Brooklyn keeper Nathan Stockie (four saves) to make it 3-2 going into four minutes of added time.

Brooklyn Italians pick up a win on the road

CRANSTON, R.I. – Jakeem Johnson spoiled the Reds’ NPSL debut when he scored the game’s lone goal to give the Brooklyn Italians a 1-0 win at Cranston Stadium on Saturday.

Johnson spent much of the match knocking on the door before his 74th minute strike. Michael Dundurand kept his Rhode Island teammates within striking distance by making eight saves.

Brooklyn’s attack was spearheaded by Christian Camacho and Christian Turizo, who played a number of balls into the box to give the guests the advantage in the shot department early.

Although early chances were hard to come by, the Reds came within inches of going into the half with the lead. In the 41st minute, Jefferson Rojas played it inside the area to Diego Tavares, who skipped a shot past Brooklyn keeper Nathan Stockie before it skipped wide of the far post.

The second half opened with the Reds searching for blood. Three minutes into the second half, Jason Garcia grabbed a chance to put the hosts when whipped a quick header in front of the net. But his effort escaped frame and the scoreboard remained unchanged.

While the Reds backline proved itself early, it faltered at a crucial moment in the 74th minute. Hoping to re-set the attack, the Rhode Island backs tried to play it back to Dandurand. But Johnson gave chase and grabbed a lazy pass, then quickly buried it past a vulnerable Dandurand to give Brooklyn the lead.

One final chance for the Reds to crack the scoresheet arrived in the 81st minute. Tavares took a pass inside the area, but couldn’t muster enough on his effort.

The Italians tarvel to Portland, Maine this Tuesday Mat 15, to play in The 2012 Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup first-round. Brooklyn Italians will face Portland Phoneix (PDL) at Memorial Field, Deering High School game time is 8 p.m.

Brooklyn Italians to Travel to Rome to play the PROS

AS Roma, Barcelona, Juventus, Sport Lisboa e Benfica, Lodigiani Calcio, Grosseto, AC Milan, Atletic Catalunya, Nuova Tor Tre Teste, Atletico Roma, FC Inter, ACF Fiorentina, US Lecce, SSD Futbolclub.

These are the team the Brooklyn Italians will be competing against. SSD Futbolclub from Rome, Italy have invited the Brooklyn Italians U12s to Rome. Players born in the year 2000 are eligible to play. The cup will take place in Rome from June 12th to June 17th.

For the sixth year the tournament’s aim is to follow the young athletes through the important step from the scholastic dimension to the agonistic one. The goal of this Tournament is to create a comparison between local soccer schools and the most important international Clubs, to exchange experiences and improve each other for kids’ best growth.

Brooklyn Italians and New York Club Soccer League Latest Addition to US Club National Premier League

CHARLESTON, S.C. (Dec. 15, 2011) – US Club Soccer has announced that the New York Club Soccer League (NYCSL) has become the newest addition to the organization’s National Premier Leagues (NPL).

The NPL has been created to provide a unified, league-based national developmental platform with the highest level of competition in given geographic areas, and to elevate and change the competitive youth soccer landscape based upon fundamental principles outlined in US Club Soccer’s 10-year vision.

The NYCSL NPL Division, which will include 6 age groups (U-12 through U-16 and U-18 boys), is the top tier of the NYCSL and is initially comprised of nine clubs in the Eastern New York area:
