Since the 1970's, physical conditioning has become an integral part of soccer. Physically fit teams like Germany and Holland started this slow process of balancing football power across the World. Today, it is not infrequent that a former football Superpower gets upset by a smaller nation such as Croatia, Bulgaria, Senegal, Cameroon or Turkey.
The game itself has transformed tactically. A player's position means close to nothing. Most defenders are required attack down the wing, while forwards always check back to link up with the halfbacks. Due to this, an average field player, runs about 10 kilometers (6 miles) per match. Some midfielders cover up to 13-15 kilometers (8 miles)!
